The office was huge. Open space, desks crammed together, no cubicles, or privacy, for that matter. The sounds of computer keyboards being typed on, phones ringing, and people talking made me want to go somewhere and hide.
This was my new job. It wasn't the perfect job, but I needed one and an opportunity had presented itself. Although, when I thought too hard about it, the details were fuzzy.
"Andi, so glad to see that you're here. Let me give you the tour." A woman with her hair in an elegant updo smiled and gestured for me to follow her. She wore a navy pantsuit. Her makeup -- blue eyeshadow and hot-pink lips -- clashed horribly with her choice of clothes. I tried not to stare. "My name is Leslie. I will be your supervisor."
I tried to smile, but that lipstick gave me a nervous twitch. "Nice to meet you."
Back in the Ancient Times of the Internet
So, I was visiting my mother last week, and she'd put together a bag of stuff for me. Toys and clothes for the small, mobile one. A book she'd bought on clearance at Barnes and Noble, and another she'd borrowed from Grandma and that I could borrow from her. Some mail from people who haven't figured out that I moved out ten years ago. A first draft copy of one of my novels.
And something I'd completely forgotten about.
Why, Hello, Television
Up until recently, I could say that I didn't watch TV. At all. Sure, I had a TV, but no cable, so it was only ever used for movies on DVD. I moved out of my mother's house in 2005 and hadn't watched much of anything since.
Then, about a month ago, we got Netflix. (I did mention I'm a late adopter, right?)
We haven't been binging like most people do -- one or two episodes a week is about all we watch. So far, at least. (My media addiction of choice is the Internet.)
So we're catching up (very very slowly) on Doctor Who, Sherlock, and of all things, Buffy, which I never watched when it was on...and enjoying them all thoroughly.
Oddly enough, all of these series have some things in common, if you squint.
